Task 2 / Typographic Exploration & Communication (Text Formatting & Expression)
LECTURESLecture 1-6 completed in Task 1 post
Week 5 - Text Formatting & Expression Exercise
In this task we were asked to create a layout design from 3 texts given by Mr. Vinod in the Facebook group.
Below are some submission requirements that we should follow :
• No images are allowed. However, some minor elements (line, shade, etc.) might be allowed
• Use a 200 x 200 mm / page paper size on Adobe inDesign
• Can only use the 9 typefaces that have been provided.

For this exercise we were allowed to use Adobe Illustrator, but only to make the type expression, whereas the Adobe inDesign for composing the text.Layout Research
From 3 editorial text choices that were provided, I chose the third one with the headline "Visual Communicators, Unite! Manifesto 2000".

Sketches
After watching the lecture and demonstration videos by Mr. Vinod, I started out by sketching several compositions and layout I wanted to use.

Digitize Progression
Next, I digitize my heading ideas on Adobe Illustrator as instructed. For the heading, I wanted to focused more on 'unite' word, so I make it bigger with different typeface than the other words. The original headline has an exclamation mark after the word 'unite', but Instead of using the letter 'i' , I changed it to an exclamation mark to emphasize on it and make it more unique. I also combined some of the letters with lines to expressed unity/one which is the definition of the word 'unite'

After that I moved the heading to Adobe inDesign and arranged it with the sub-headlines and main text.
I adjusted the body text as some of them have double space and ragging. I also make sure that all of the text sit on the baseline grid with the quick apply tool.

In the fifth layout I try to colored the first page with black color and rotate the headers to make it more fun and interesting.

FEEDBACKSWeek 5
General feedback : Don't overload the typefaces with too many additional features (from lecture 5 video).
Specific feedback :
Week 6
General feedback : Make sure the header design expressed the definition of the word/text
Specific feedback : -
Week 7
General feedback :
Specific feedback : The layout and expression are good enough. It also has a well balanced on the text
REFLECTION Experience
For me this task is challenging because we need to do a nice layout
Observation
I realized that flow in a layout composition is very important in order for the viewer to read it easily.
Findings
I found that doing more research helps me so much on doing the exercise as I have little knowledge of layout composition
FURTHER READINGtypographic design: FORM AND COMMUNICATION
 |
Figure 3.1 Book cover (n.d) |
The topic that caught my attention from this book is the grids. In books or website, multicolumn grids are used and they use margins for boundaries typographic elements.
 |
Figure 3.2 Structure of multi column (n.d) |
It is important to take note of type size, line length and leading when working on a multi column. Column intervals are also used to create the flow of reading from one column to the next without affecting the reading flow. Author mentioned that using grids provide flexibility and also enable designer to layer typographic elements and illusion of 3D space.
"Modules are formed by the intersections of horizontal and vertical lines. These units provide zones for the placement of different parts of information."
Modular grids are used to create hierarchy to differentiate the information given in the body text. The more complex the grids are, the more flexible it is to move around the materials. Although it is important to remember, the more you explore the layout, the higher risk it is to lose the hierarchy, and too little exploration could create in a monotonous layout.
